I could not hate this opinion piece by Jennifer Rubin more. This intones the forever idea that churches should not be political.

Ms. Rubin states that the reason for the decline of the Religious Right is that all of a sudden it got political. No! Rubin states it straight out in the article. The reason for the precipitous decline of the Religious Right or white Evangelicals is that its values are not in keeping with young people! And this is even more unbelievable when it is recognized that evangelical Christian faith is aimed at the mythic/literal development stage of…

The Holy Bible open to the wider world.

I am a product of the wyt church. For the most part, I have values around keeping a service tight, not letting it go too long, and making sure I don’t give people I know who will go on and on the rope to hang me on as a worship leader. I want to show the rest of the worshipping community that I am “minding the store” — watching the clock so they do not have to do so.

Even as I write those words, I realize how deeply capitalist Christian mainline worship has become. Ok, how deeply capitalist I…

It was Brazilian Archbishop Dom Hélder Câmara who wrote the text Spiral of Violence as a wisdom teaching from which he shared his concern for those who would have their eyes opened to the regular State violence that enforces injustice and regularly destroys the life of all creation. Câmara saw the youth in many countries rising up to confront that State violence with violent revolution. If this violent choice would be made, he feared, the State’s predictable response would be to squash whatever revolution or rebellion with escalatory violence reasoning that the social order would need to be protected.

The…

A young pastor queried on Facebook, what was he to do as more conservative church members began to push on him as he confronted the values of the Trump Administration. This is what I wrote in response.

I always have a row reserved (in almost any mainline, you can find one up front) for Guatemalan refugees I accompanied to the border. Diego and Natalia are always there. And they want to know if I’m going to remember them and tell the truth.

Everybody needs a front row of people who are not present for worship — people you promised to…

Every night CNN tries to convince me that this is it. They’ve got him. This is the scandal, the misstatement, the court case, the misbehavior, or the voting swing. I do like Don Lemon’s personality so I would get dragged into believing that this was it. But every night my hopes would be dashed as CNN ramped back up with a whole new list of charges, reveals, or quotes that would certainly bring an end to the fascist opportunist.

But here’s the thing. Donald J. Trump rose to power because he provided and provides great ratings for all of these…

If I spend all day talking and praying Jesus, but do not wear a mask, I come off sounding like a dentist’s drill or nails down a chalkboard. And if I can tell you the sins and blessings of the world, dare sickness by being in unmasked, crowded rallies, but if I do not keep social distance, I am a tumbleweed in the wilderness. If I give till it hurts to my church and my community, but do not take the pandemic seriously, I don’t change a thing.

Meanwhile, love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not act like…

I have not heard it covered yet. Maybe somebody can point to a journalist who covered it. As I watched CNN’s post-debate coverage, the largely white panel did not bring it up. African-American panelist, Van Jones, did some virtue signaling by referencing the “first-time” status of Senator Kamala Harris. African-American analyst, Abby Phillip, who brings some needed youth and brilliance to CNN, did not bring it up.

What I am referencing is the one question that had Senator Harris lift her gaze off any script or pre-recorded talking point. She began to talk forcefully and confidently about race. Think about…
